What's Up Wednesday: October 2026

I'm finishing writing this post as I watch the Brewers take on the Rays in Game 4 of the World Series. Even though my Jays aren't playing in it, I'm still soaking up all the baseball I can while it's still being played.

Answering these questions monthly helps me reflect on the past month and I really appreciate having a record of what we've been up to. The questions come from Shay at Mix and Match Mama and Sheaffer at Sheaffer Told Me Too.

What we're eating this week... We got lots of amazing fall veggies in the last weeks of our CSA so I made a couple of different kinds of squash soup, cabbage rolls, and we've discovered a really yummy stir fry with Napa leaf cabbage (aka Tokyo Bakana). It's been a delicious month of eating around here. Tonight Rachel is making supper and she likes to experiment with recipes she finds on Instagram so we'll see how that goes...

Also, when I was in New York with Janice, I picked up a bag of cinnamon crunch bagels so Rachel and I devoured those this month. Yum!!!

What I'm reminiscing about... Well, almost a year ago, our big renovation started. This time last year we were packing rooms up, making tons of trips to the thrift store and our storage unit, and getting ready for chaos. After all is said and done, I can say, it was so worth it!

What I'm loving... All the fall colours. They've been amazing this year and I've just been really trying to notice them this year.

What we've been up to... October started out with a bang as I took a couple of days off work and Janice and I enjoyed a trip to New York City. We saw Hadestown, walked all over lower Manhattan, had an amazing tea time at a chocolate cafe, and discovered tiny art prints. It was so much fun!

After that, we had a quieter month, and I haven't actually taken all that many pictures. We had a very quiet Thanksgiving weekend but Dave and I did go on a hike in the woods.
Rachel and I participated in a readathon...
We read at Starbucks for a bit after walking to the library.

We celebrated our church's 40th anniversary this past weekend and Dave and Sam sang in the choir. And we've had a lot of time to relax and have naps after our very full start to the fall.
We also had time for S'mores on the deck.

What I'm dreading... I need to read my inspirational book from last year, How to Winter by Kari Leibowitz, because I'm already dreading winter. As the days get darker and the temperature gets colder, I need to remember how winter can be really beautiful.

What I'm working on... I'm still working on sorting my office and hanging pictures. I'm just not very motivated to deal with things in my office so it's taking a long time. We've also been starting to do some winter yard clean up. This week I'll probably be raking leaves.

This has also been a week of self-care for me. I took advantage of the beautiful weather and walked home from church on Sunday, I had a massage earlier this week, I had a nap yesterday after work, and I'm going for another walk with a friend tonight. So I'm also working on taking care of myself.

What I'm excited about... Currently, I'm excited that the Brewers are likely going to win the World Series!!! I've definitely been cheering for them this post-season and they've been playing some amazing baseball.

I'm also excited about making Applesauce Jumbles, drinking Cranberry Tea, and watching holiday Hallmark movies. And, as you'll see below, under "what I'm wearing", I'm also excited about my matching set!

What I'm watching/reading... As I mentioned above, Rachel and I did a readathon a couple of weeks ago and I read This Book Made Me Think of You by Libby Page. I cried my way through it and I LOVED it. It's a love story but also about a love of books and bookstores and how reading can change your life. It was soooo good!!! This book is divided by months and each month, there is a list of suggested books for that month. I took pictures of each month's suggestions and I will definitely be reading some of those over the next year or so.
As I mentioned above, I've been watching World Series baseball. I've also been watching the tree in our back yard change colours. Our bedroom window looks out over the tree and it's given me a whole new view of it! Hahaha!!!

What I'm listening to... Sam is still teaching himself guitar so I've been hearing a lot of guitar playing coming from the basement. I love it! Also, I've been paying attention as I walk and enjoying hearing the crunch of leaves underfoot. Additionally, after seeing Hadestown in New York at the beginning of the month, I've been listening to that soundtrack over and over.

What I'm wearing... Rachel convinced me that watching Hallmark movies would be way better this fall if we had matching sets to wear. I've been wearing mine for the past two weeks straight and, honestly, I might have to get another one because I'm loving mine.

What I'm doing this weekend... I'm helping to host a Jr Youth event, I might be supervising a sleepover for Rachel and her friends, and Rachel and I will probably get ice cream so we can take advantage of the October flavours at our favourite ice cream shop. Dave and Sam are headed out of town (with the car) for the weekend so whatever Rachel and I do, we'll probably be walking a lot!

What I'm looking forward to next month...We're going to a concert which I'm really excited about! Other than that, November will be a lot of being cozy at home as it gets darker and colder outside. November will never be my favourite, but I've learned to embrace it (a bit.)

So that's what's up with us this last Wednesday in October. Thankfully things have slowed down a bit for us, even if does make for a less interesting blog post :)

Thank you for being interested in my life as I blog it and for leaving a comment. Comments make me happier than reading a good book and drinking a cold Coke. Almost :)
