32 Years Ago Today...

...Dave was born at 26 weeks gestation. He weighed 2 pounds, 1 ounce, and was about fifteen inches long. The picture below wasn't taken until he was two months old and look how big the thumbs are of the person holding him.

Dave hates this picture because he thinks he looks ugly. I love this picture because it is a testament of survival. Also, when I was pregnant, Dave would hold this picture up to my belly and warn our kids about the perils of being too impatient to be born!!!
Dave's first year of life was really rough. I cannot imagine what his parents went through. At one year of age, he only weighed 12 pounds and they celebrated his first birthday in the hospital. He celebrated with his immediate family, his dad's parents, and "assorted nurses." He had a surgery scheduled for the next day.

Dave is a walking miracle. He would be to me anyways, but that picture above, contrasted with the picture below, just goes to show that there are miracles among us, and my husband is one of them. He has absolutely no side effects from being born so early, apart from a lot of unusual scars. And so today, we are celebrating him.

Happy Birthday Dave. I love you!

  2. This isn't the first time I've heard Dave's birth story, but it sucker-punches me every single time. Just SO unbelievable...knowing how difficult a trajectory a baby born at 26 weeks would have NOW, with like..infinite medical advances since 1982...man. Just to think he made it THEN. Amazing. Happy Birthday, Dave!!

  3. WOW! That is amazing! Even at 26 weeks these days it's risky business, let alone 32 years ago! That is definitely a great reason to celebrate! Happy birthday Dave!

Thank you for being interested in my life as I blog it and for leaving a comment. Comments make me happier than reading a good book and drinking a cold Coke. Almost :)
