Natasha And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Do you all know the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day? If you don't, you should get that book. Then you will know why I am moving to Australia :) Okay. Just kidding. We're moving about six blocks away, in about two weeks, and obviously our water heater at our current house knows that. I'm guessing that's why it decided to leak all over our laundry room yesterday morning. Did I mention that the laundry room is where all the packed and dismantled moving boxes were being stored?
See, all the boxes (and bikes and sleds and...) in the picture on the right were being stored in the big empty space in the picture on the left. But now we have a big empty space, lots of boxes in our play area and all our extra towels soaking up water. Oh yeah, and no hot water. Incidentally I was too tired to shower yesterday morning before I went to start a load of laundry and discovered the (minor) flood. (Oh, and I have three loads of laundry to do too. (Oh, and all the towels.) Not to mention dishes...)
So Dave and I spent some time getting mad and panicking. Then I called my friend, whose three kids I was supposed to be watching at our house and asked if I could bring Sam and Rachel to their house and watch all five kids there. (It was supposed to be raining all day and the basement play area is one of the only places to play when Rachel is having her afternoon nap. Yeah, that basement area full of boxes.) Dave stayed home from work to wait for the water heater repair person to show up. Did I also mention that we don't have our landlord's phone number so we were doing all this communicating by E-MAIL?!?! (Which is super-annoying in an emergency.) And Dave also repacked the few boxes which had gotten wet. And I was dealing with "we're closing on our house in less than two days" e-mails at the same time. And watching five kids. And trying to figure out where some money which was supposed to be transferred into my account for our house closing had gone to. (Incidentally, the bank screwed up and put it in Dave's account. sigh.) And making sure we had insurance as our insurance broker was on vacation until today. (And didn't tell us. Thanks.) And responding to questions from our lawyers.

And then, to top it all off, Rachel's eye did this:

So Sam, Rachel and I came home after our six hour adventure at our friend's house, ate supper and hurried to our final pre-closing house viewing. (I've never been so happy to see our (almost ours!) new house as I was tonight.) Then we rushed to the walk-in clinic so we could get Rachel's eye checked out. We got there 40 minutes before it closed. And they were over-booked and wouldn't let us be seen. I cried. I mean, would you refuse to look at a toddler with an eye like the one above?!?!??

Then I called the babysitter we have lined up for our meeting with our lawyers tomorrow morning, just to let her know that a new water heater will be installed while she is here and found out she thought she was babysitting for us on Friday morning and was at a sleepover. (Maybe the whole water heater crisis was so that we could find out that one little piece of information tonight instead of tomorrow morning. Maybe.)

I told Dave that "This day was about the worst one ever, barring a major medical emergency or someone dying." And then we found out our neighbour's car was stolen from their driveway sometime early this morning. Yeah, the same neighbour we share a driveway with.

So today I am going to wake up, take a cold shower (because times are getting desperate around here!) and be thankful that our car is still in our driveway. Probably.

  1. That definitely qualifies as an Alexander sort of day. One of my favorite books!
Also Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. "Today was a tough day...tomorrow will be better." Here's hoping that is true!

  5. Oh no, I hate that you had such a rotten day, but hopefully, that will just make today even better in comparison! Wow, could that much bad stuff really happen all in one day? Poor Rachel...she looks so pitiful! I am sure her eye will be fine and probably looks worse than it is. I hope you enjoy this WONDERFUL day today! Prayers and hugs!

Thank you for being interested in my life as I blog it and for leaving a comment. Comments make me happier than reading a good book and drinking a cold Coke. Almost :)
