Week 8: 5 Things From My Bucket List

I postponed this challenge a whole week because, honestly, I don't have a bucket list. I've been thinking about why I don't and here's the conclusion I've come to: Once I start dreaming about something, I dream about it for a bit, but then I talk about it, and work to make it a reality, as much as is within my ability to do so.

So my dad and I dreamed about doing the Trans-Siberian Railway together, and about five years after we started dreaming about it, we made it a reality. Of course, we had dreamed about doing it with my grandpa, but he died of cancer before we could.

When I started dreaming of doing a Southern Road Trip to meet some blogger friends, I started talking to Dave about it, as if it were a fact. "When we go on our Southern Road Trip, we will... " I even talked about starting our trip with a long weekend in Virginia with Tim and Janice. And, while we didn't do everything we had talked about, some things were better (a week in Hilton Head with Tim, Janice, Tessa, and Willem) and some things I was okay to let go of (visiting the Coke factory in Atlanta).

So because of that, I don't really have a bucket list. I've had (made/taken) the opportunities to do some pretty amazing things in my life. I've lived overseas (in Europe for a year and in the Middle East for a year and a half). I've traveled to 38 countries and five continents. I'm married with two great kids and an amazing husband.

So with all that said, here are a few of the things I'm dreaming about right now:

1) I would like Dave and I to experience married life with two toilets. The entire time we've been married, we've only ever lived in houses with one bathroom, and thus, one toilet. And while "learning to replace a toilet" has never been one of my dreams, it seems like that will be something I do in the near future. Blah.
2) I'd like to drive Route 66 in the United States. And maybe I can visit some more blog friends on the way :)

3) I'd like to visit South America and spend some more time in Africa. Technically, I've been to Africa, since I've been to Cairo, but I'd like to get further into Africa. We're starting to dream about visiting our friends who moved to Kenya last year.
These four kids, together again... This time in Kenya!

4) I want to go to the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Canada is made up of ten provinces and three territories and I've been to every province and the Yukon Territory, so I just have these two territories left to visit.

5) Since I did a trip with just my dad, I'd love to do one with my mom. We've started talking about it a little, but it might take a few years to work out the details. It might include a European cruise (which is another thing I'd love to do -- I've never cruised). And it might also include my dad and Dave :) But that's okay, because sometimes dreams change.

So there you go -- of course my (not a) bucket list includes travel because, if there's one thing I love to do, it's travel.

Do you have a bucket list? If so, what's on it? And what are you dreaming about lately?

  1. I also don't really have one. I've done skydiving, bungee jumping, hang gliding, etc. which I think were major ones for me. Sometimes I kind of feel like "what's next!?". I mean, I obviously want to do a lot more travelling, get married some day and have kids, but other than that I can't think of anything specific!

  4. If you do the Route 66 road trip, I want to join! ;-) Yes, I hope you know just how lucky and blessed you are to have been able to travel so much and to have family to help you make it happen. Hope you know that isn't exactly the norm! ;-)

  5. My parents live in Illinois by that... If you go, let me know when and I will coordinate going to visit my parents and we can meet again in Illinois! :)

  6. I don't necessarily have a bucket list, but I'd love to visit Australia or Egypt someday. Also while I haven't driven Route 66 in it's entirety I have at least been on a few pieces of it.

Thank you for being interested in my life as I blog it and for leaving a comment. Comments make me happier than reading a good book and drinking a cold Coke. Almost :)
