On Saturday we, along with Tessa and Willem, had a fun day out and about. We had so many adventures, in fact, that it's going to take a few blog posts to write about it all. So sit back and enjoy.
When we showed up at Tessa and Willem's, we discovered that Tessa and I were twinsies! So we had to get a picture. We let Tim be in the picture too, even though he hadn't gotten the "wear grey shorts" memo :) And then Dave and Willem had to get a picture of their coordinating outfits. We were a very stylish group!
After a quick stop at the library (where I was reintroduced to The Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner -- check it out if you haven't), we were on our way to the Brantford Twin Valley Zoo. There is a huge zoo in Toronto, but this zoo is quite good and very manageable with small children. Plus it was interesting enough that Tessa and Willem also liked it.

We saw owls (Rachel's favourite), a baby ostrich, a camel, a bear, a swan family with babies, a zebra, a saurus crane and more.
Dave made some friends!
The ring tailed lemurs put on a show for us. (The bobcats also put on "a show" for us but we won't talk about that one! Ha! Thankfully Willem thought they were just making farting noises, and Sam and Rachel ignored them!)
Then the zoo had an animal show where they showed off six different animals including Frodo the tortoise, a baby hedgehog, and a really cute ferret.
We got some pictures with the bear.
Rachel Bear and Willem Bear spent some time growling at each other!
We also spent some time in the petting area. The goats really enjoyed nibbling on Tessa and Willem's clothes which freaked Rachel out! Every time a goat got near her, she yelled, "Don't eat me!" and ran away. It was kind of funny!
All in all, it was a fun outing and the day wasn't over yet...
OH how I love the Boxcar children!!!!!! What a great series!!! :) And I love your zoo visit! Sure am hoping we can get there this year too - obviously a DIFFERENT zoo, but still a zoo! :)
ReplyDeleteI really loved The Boxcar Children growing up. I read the first three chapters of the first book to Sam yesterday and he LOVED it. I can't wait to read more tonight!

ReplyDeleteI really love smaller zoos like this one where you get a more close up experience with the animals...and definitely more manageable with kids. We actually haven't been to our state's zoo for this reason. It is very big in size and spread out because the animal habitats are very big and more "humane" for the animals. It makes for a beautiful zoo but a lot of walking. We are thinking of doing the SC zoo one of these days because it is a smaller and more manageable zoo. Of course, I guess you could count our recent visit to the D.C. zoo as our zoo trip for the year. :-)

ReplyDeleteNever heard of Raffi- whoever :) I did however read all the Boxcar books as a kid too :-) I need to introduce those to Kate. Also I love how a few posts forward you wrote about reading after lunch.... love that idea because we are all usually cranky and tired and hurried at bedtime....and the kids love to listen to books. We had a " show" from the orangutans the other day at the zoo and our own fake bear too.... same lives :-)
