Memory Verses 10,11,12 (The One With All The Parantheses)

So it's been awhile since I shared my SSMT verses with you. I am still trying to memorize verses every two weeks. (Please don't ask me how it's going. Let's just say I'm doing better with my new gym visits/no snacking/better sleeping goals!) Anyways, I did want to put the verses out there for posterity. (Also you can then hold me accountable for memorizing them.) And I know the verses are already on Beth Moore's blog (which is really the Living Proof blog) but then you'd have to search through 2,457 comments alone to find my verse (although on verse 12 I was the first commenter which is super-exciting because...I get a prize or...nothing!) so I'm making it easier for you by posting my verses here. Besides that way you get to hear about my "conversation" with my grandma. (As you may remember from my first post about this, I am picking verses from my grandma's Bible which came to me after her death. I pick the verses by choosing ones which she underlined and then trying to figure out why they might have been meaningful to her. When I get to heaven she will laugh about my attempts to understand this and then she will set me straight!)

Anyways, verse 10 (May 15-31, if you're keeping track) was from Proverbs 3:19-20. I have been very concerned, and stressed, about global warming lately, and what the future holds for the world's children. (Heck, at this rate, what does it hold for us???) So Dave and I have been talking about it, trying to get our family all outfitted to ride bikes and trying to drive less. We are already a one car family but I feel like there are so many "quick drives" we do, which we could do just as easily, if taking only slightly longer, on a bike. It's healthy for us and the earth. Anyways... so I was searching for a verse for the last half of May and I found this one:

"By wisdom the Lord  laid the earth's foundations,
   by understanding he set the heavens in place;
by his knowledge the deeps were divided,
   and the clouds let drop the dew."

These two verses affirm to me, that while humans have to do their part too, the earth is God's and he knows what's going to happen. God is in control.

From June 1-14 I focused on 1 Chronicles 29:18. I have been reading through the Bible this year and I'm now firmly into the Psalms (and only about a week behind on my "daily" reading. Ha!). I found this verse in Chronicles which Grandma had underlined. It comes after the children of Israel keep messing up and getting punished and turning back to God and messing up again and getting punished and turning back and... well, you get the picture :) (Really the whole Old Testament (thus far) is just a big "it's okay to mess up even if you've vowed not to, because God gives 97th chances as long as you repent and turn back to Him" (with a few (hundred) chapters on how to build a temple thrown in for variety).) Anyways, this verse comes at the end of a re-covenanting to serve God and to walk in His ways and I thought it was beautiful. My guess is that Grandma underlined this verse as a prayer for herself, for her family, for her church, for everyone...

"O Lord, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel,
keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever,
and keep their hearts loyal to you."

From June 15-30, I have broken with my previous method of choosing verses. Dave and I will celebrate five years of marriage on June 29 and I don't have our wedding scripture memorized. (Do you have your wedding scripture memorized???) I decided I would focus on those verses for these two weeks. I still absolutely love our verses and would choose them again if we had the choice. We first took note of these verses in a book on Jewish marriage we were reading and we kept coming back to them over and over again. So here is Hosea 2:19-20:

I will betroth you to me forever;
   I will betroth you in righteousness and justice,
        in love and compassion.
I will betroth you in faithfulness,
   and you will acknowledge the Lord.

So there it is -- my last three Bible memorizing verses.

And now ends 'The One With All The Parantheses.' Almost. Are any of you Friends fanatics (like I might (possibly) be)? If so, do you remember how all the episodes were called "The One..." followed by "With" or "Where" or "When"? When I started writing this post it hit me that this post was "The One With All The Parantheses" which I thought was kind of funny. So there is my reasoning. And if you aren't a Friends person, you should totally watch it. I LOVED that show and actually own all ten seasons. You can borrow them from me if you need to!

  1. What great verses and insight!! And also, I have seriously considered one year doing a year of naming all of my blogs in that 'The One With...' style. I saw another blogger do that a few years ago and it cracked me up. Who knows...maybe 2014 will be the year!

  2. Oh, I didn't know you were such a Friends fanatic...so funny! I loved your wedding verse...so perfect! Your anniversary is very close to ours and may just end up being the date of Mattie's birth. :-)

  3. The verse from Hosea is actually what we used as our vows at our wedding. And no, I don't have it memorized nor did I have it memorized the day of our wedding.

Thank you for being interested in my life as I blog it and for leaving a comment. Comments make me happier than reading a good book and drinking a cold Coke. Almost :)
