Poignant Reminder

We like to joke that my grandma liked to be in control. She always enjoyed when her family was gathered around her and listening to her mandates, "Smile!" "Have fun!" "Enjoy life!" Nothing made her happier than a family celebration with everyone in attendance and her "calling the shots," as my dad would put it!

Even though I'm adopted, I seem to have inherited some of her "I like to be in charge" tendencies, and boy, oh boy, has this last week been a huge slap in the face that I am NOT in charge. I do NOT have control over my life. And while God does care about me, my human plans (and hopes and dreams) are NOT the final word in how my life is going to turn out.

So while I was flipping through Grandma's Bible to find a verse she'd underlined for the first half of my March memorizing challenge, I found this one from Job 38:12.

"Have you ever given orders to the morning,
or shown the dawn its place,"

God is speaking to Job and the rest of the sentence continues in verse 13, "that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?" But Grandma didn't underline verse 13, she just highlighted verse 12. I like to think that maybe something wasn't going according to her plans when she chose to remind herself of who is ultimately in control.

So for the first half of March I will be focused on that -- much as I'd like to be in control of my life I'm not, God is in control, God has a better plan and God's plan is unimaginably more than what I can dream of today.

  1. Awww, I love that your Grandma can still speak to you from her old Bible. What a special legacy! And to know she often felt as you are feeling is so comforting. I am a bit of a control freak too...just ask Eddie. Haha! This reminder that God is in control is a good one. I'll pray that we can both let Him do His job! ;-)

Thank you for being interested in my life as I blog it and for leaving a comment. Comments make me happier than reading a good book and drinking a cold Coke. Almost :)
