We're Scientists, Don't You Know

ESQ (Engineering Science Quest) is a program run through our local university. They "envision a world where interest in science and engineering is common amongst everyone. We do this through engaging kids in hands-on activities that serve to explore the science behind their world!" (taken from their website)

Last week they came to Sam's school for an evening and we decided to go check it out. Since I hadn't read their website I didn't realize everything would be quite so hands on so I was surprised at how much work it was! But it was also a lot of fun.
First Sam and I built a car which was supposed to allow a water balloon to go down a ramp in it without breaking. How'd we do, you ask? Watch the video :)

Then we built a floating city which was supposed to survive a tsunami, a meteorite strike and an alien attack. As long as a few aliens can live peacefully with our inhabitants, our city will be floating on a body of water near you umm... probably never :)

There were also other cool things to check out like how playdough does (or does not) conduct electricity. Sam wasn't really supposed to be using two batteries but you know, he wants to be a scientist when he grows up (really, he does!) and all good scientists like to experiment.
Since we weren't too keen on Rachel being around lights on pins and batteries, Dave went with her to make a kaleidoscope. It went well :)

And since being a scientist is thirsty work, Sam introduced Rachel to the water fountains at school.

  1. That looks like so much fun! I love getting nights out like that with the kiddos.

  2. So fun! I can definitely see Sam becoming a scientist one day. He has such an intelligent and curious personality. I also love how he is showing Rachel around school. Evan loves to do that with Brody too. Great big brothers! :-)

Thank you for being interested in my life as I blog it and for leaving a comment. Comments make me happier than reading a good book and drinking a cold Coke. Almost :)
